Will Sickle Cell Get It’s Grown-Up Voice – Week 2

November 23rd, 2009 by przthomas received 6 Comments »

Being A Part Of The 8′ers Movement Is Like Getting An Extra Day In Your Week.

This is week two of my project. For those just joining me, let me tell you about my goal. In 2010 we will be celebrating 100 years of the discovery of sickle cell.  Up until now all we have had is our postor child, I am intending on giving sickle cell it’s grown-up voice.  I am working to create a national advocacy group for adults with sickle cell disease. This group will be called the SCD Soldier Network.  In creating this national campaign, I was granted the opportunity to post a weekly video blog right here on 8dazeaweakend.  In my first video I was in the hospital and I didn’t want that to stop me, so I did an introduction to the campaign right from my hospital bed.  I’m sorry to announce that I am still in the hospital, but that doesn’t mean that I haven’t been working.

I decided at the beginning of this campaign, that I wanted an anthem that would ignite a movement.  When I became an 8′er, I realized that people just need motivation to do whatever it is that you need from them.  I don’t know if Dallas Austin is aware of the impact that this 8′ers movement is having on people, but it is motivating me to find ways around my obsticals and causing me to do things that I would normally put off until a better day.  That is why I say it’s like getting an extra day in my week.

I have spoken with several groups that are working on sickle cell related projects and we are going to team up so that we can make a greater impact.  I will also be contacting the national & local sickle cell associations so that this project can go smoothly.  I am hoping that everyone will be operating in the same type of spirit as the people who helped me with my anthem.  I wrote the lyrics and since I can’t sing, it was nothing more than a poem until my niece Cheryl Zachery aka Mecca Dawn put her blessing on it.  She came right out of the box, not only was she willing she was ready.  Then there was this complete stranger Jeffery Donovan aka JNicks who I contacted after seeing his work.  He is a Sims producer and he does incredible animated videos. He was also willing and ready to help me.  Everything is just a ruff draft right now, but I put together a snippet, so you could see the flame that I ignited over the last week.

I need some front line soldiers with me.  Watch my little preview and let me know what you think. Wish me luck, cause I have too much to do to be in this hospital.  If you think that you can help me to meet my goal of creating this advocacy group, I would be more than happy to hear from you.

  1. Jackie McDaniel says:

I think it’s time for a voice for people struggling with sickle cell, I also think m.e.e.t.ministry.com can help those with this sickle disorder, but we all have to be willing to change some things in our lives, and be open to suggestions, by all means people with sickle cell need a voice so people will know this is an ongoing battle, and more research need to take place to cure this disorder. It appears it is only attacking people of color, so what causes that, and why, and why is it not more funding to research for a cure?…Way to go prz!
